Edward is an old engine, who has become sad, because he hasn't been let out of his shed for quite some time. The other engines at the sheds tell Edward that the driver won't choose to drive him, thus making Edward more upset. Edward soon cheers up when the driver and fireman do choose him. Edward has fun pulling the coaches, and the coaches are very impressed. That night Edward returns to the sheds were he falls fast asleep. The next morning, Gordon taunts Edward, telling him to watch, as he rushes by with the express that afternoon. Edward ignores Gordon, and goes to shunt the troublesome trucks in the yard. Edwards works very hard throughout the day, and eventually goes to take a rest. As he does this he hears Gordon's whistle, and is suprised to see Gordon pulling a dirty goods train. He soon gets to the slope of a hill, were he gets stuck. Edward is called to help push the express engine up the hill. Gordon believes that little Edward will be no use, in pushing him up the hill. Eventually they make it to the top of the hill, and Gordon, in a rush, speeds away, without even thanking Edward. Edward, quit out of breath puffs into the siding next to Maron, where his drive and fireman give him a long drink, promising to give him a nice new coat of blue paint as a reward.
